After nearly 2 solid months of unusual, sunny weather, Mamma Nature decided that it was time for the Oregon coast to experience winter the way it is supposed to be-a big storm with wind-driven rain, pounding surf, and hurricane-force wind gusts of 75 miles an hour. This storm is a bit more intense than the usual stock. The forecasters are calling for 35-foot waves today and when it is all said and done, a whopping 10 inches of rain! Rumor has it that one of our resident windsurfers, Dana Miller, was going to rip it up at the south jetty today!
The rain is expected to continue through the weekend and into next week. If you love storm watching, now is the time to come. Reserve one of our second floor rooms or a room on the first floor with your own private spa tub on the balcony and hear the ocean roar!
If you can’t make it over, watch from the comfort of your own home, via our webcam high atop the Inn of the Beachcomber.

February is almot here and that means that it is time to come to Gold Beach and participate in the glass ball/geocache hunt.
The Gold Beach Visitor Center has all of the info about geocaching and they are also responsible for placing the glass balls on the beach and in the grassy part of the dunes and trails from the hotels and downtown. These events run from February through April, so if the weather isn’t cooperative there is plenty of time to come and try your luck. Prizes are awarded each month and at the end of the event there is a Grand Prize-a GPS system worth $450!
Due to the funny, sunny weather we have had for the last 2 months the season for Dungeness crab was delayed. It just opened a couple of weeks ago and the crabs are being hauled in by our local fishermen for your dining pleasure. Here at the Inn of the Beachcomber we have deep discount internet specials so that, whether you come for the crabs or the treasure hunting, you can stay in a comfortable room and enjoy the time you have in beautiful Gold Beach!

The crazy days of summer give way to the more peaceful days of Fall. The salmon are still running and the days begin to mix up with sun and showers. October is still a mostly sunny month and there are plenty of opportunities to drink in the sun and take a long, quiet stroll on the beach. Fall is also a good time to visit the shops and look for that one-of-a-kind gift for the Holidays instead of rushing around at the last minute. Look on our rates page for Fall specials and “stay an extra day” in Gold Beach.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding is an ancient form of surfing that has been brought back in modern times from the islands of Hawai’i. Lately there is a big push in the sport on the west coast of the States. The Inn of the Beachcomber is a proud sponsor of the annual Wavebash that features windsurfing, and new for 2011 there will be Stand Up Paddle Board events that will bring the champion himself, Kai Lenny.
Because of the growing popularity of the paddle board, the Inn of the Beachcomber is pleased to announce a complete line of paddle boards and accessories to rent. The cool thing about paddle boards is that they can not only be used in the ocean but on the river as well, and what better place to try the boards than Gold Beach with its Rogue River and Pacific Ocean? The sport is suitable for all ages and the word is to get experience on the river first then try the ocean. Just when you thought you could not have any more fun, we have another reason for you to come to the Inn of the Beachcomber and beautiful Gold Beach!

April is the final month of our glass ball/goecache hunt. The balls are planted weekly on the beach and grassy dunes next to the beach. Geocaches are located throughout town and on the beach. Bring either to the Gold Beach Visitor’s Center for the monthly prize, and be entered into the May 1st drawing for a GPS system. This blogger thinks that GPS and map should be used concordantly. The hotel has had a few phone calls of guests getting lost trying to get to Gold Beach, or to the hotel because of the wrong directions given by the GPS. Complete faith in a machine is not a substitute for the human brain.
